General description
Angiotensin II is a renin-angiotensin system (RAS) effector molecule, which binds to angiotensin II type-1 (AT1R) and angiotensin II type-2 (AT2R) receptors. The gene is located on human chromosome 3q24. Angiotensin II is mainly expressed in vessel walls, lung and kidney.
Application
[Asn1, Val5]-Angiotensin II has been used:
- to study the effects of ACTH, serotonin, Ang II, carbachol and elevated [K+] on catecholamine and serotonin release
- to induce cyclophilin D (CypD)–dependent mitochondrial vascular superoxide (O2. - ) production in hypertension
- to increase the homocysteine-induced ER stress-inducible, ubiquitin-like domain member 1 (HERPUD1) protein level in HeLa cells
Biochem/physiol Actions
Angiotensin II functions as a vasoconstrictor and controls cardiovascular function. It maintains water-sodium homeostasis, modulates cellular proliferation and vascular remodelling of renin-angiotensin system. Angiotensin II has inflammatory effects.
Synthetic angiotensin agonist that is involved in the regulation of blood pressure, water consumption, and hydromineral balance in fish.
