General description
Human serum albumin (HSA) is a soluble, globular, and unglycosylated monomeric protein, which is abundantly found in the plasma. It contains three homologous domains, numbered I, II, and III. Each domain is divided into subdomains A and B comprising common structural motifs. The HSA gene is localized to the human chromosome 4q13.3.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Human serum albumin (HSA) acts as the most important carrier protein for fatty acids, thyroid hormones, and steroids. It serves as a supplement in cell culture medium for the generation of vaccines and pharmaceuticals. HSA acts as a valuable biomarker for diseases, such as severe acute graft-versus-host disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is clinically used to treat serious burn injuries, hemorrhagic shock, hypoproteinemia, and fetal erythroblastosis. HSA is used in biological applications including nano delivery of drugs, carrier of oxygen, and fusion of peptides.
