Amphotericin B is an antimicrobial/antifungal agent effective against yeast and other fungi. It is a mixture of polyenes. It interrupts cell membrane permeability by binding sterols resulting in the loss of low molecular weight compounds from the cell. Amphotericin B may be toxic to some insect cell types. It is inactive against bacteria, rickettsia and viruses. Amphotericin B is used to study the affects of the influx of calcium on antifungal activity and to study the binding and kinetics of Amphotericin B to sterols in monolayers, aqueous solutions, and phospholipid bilayers. It is also commonly used in tissue culture as an antifungal supplement. Amphotericin B is a polyene antifungal antibiotic from Streptomyces. It has an affinity for sterols, primarily ergosterols, of fungal cell membranes. It forms channels in the membranes, causing small molecules to leak out which contributes to cell death. Antimicrobial spectrum: fungi and yeast. Polyene antifungal antibiotic from Streptomyces. Affinity for sterols, primarily ergosterols, of fungal cell membranes.
