General description
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a zinc-metallopeptidase belonging to the peptidase M2 family. It catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II and the degradation of bradykinin, which increases the vasoconstrictive effects of angiotensin. The Angiotensin-converting enzyme plays an important role in maintaining cardiac function and vascular tone. It is highly expressed in the heart, lung, kidney, gastrointestinal system, and prostate. Defects in the Angiotensin-converting may contribute cardiac disease; and renal tubular dysgenesis, a condition characterized by persistent fetal anuria and perinatal death.
