General description
Neutrophil elastase (NE) is a monomeric protein, encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 19p13.3. The protein has a molecular mass of 25 kDa and is mainly present in the neutrophil granules (located in the neutrophil cytoplasm).
Neutrophil elastase is a serine proteinase synthesized by promyelocytes and promonocytes. It is secreted by neutrophils to degrade extracellular matrix, and to destroy bacteria. It is used as a marker for myeloid leukemia cells.
Immunogen
Synthetic peptide from human neutrophil elastase protein.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Neutrophil elastase (NE) is a key driver of inflammation in many cardiopulmonary and systemic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. The encoded protein catalyzes the cleavage of tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase to produce cytokine domains that stimulates neutrophil chemotaxis. In addition, NE also facilitates the secretion of the neutrophil chemoattractant, interleukin-8 from endothelial cells.
