General description
Solute carrier family 34 member 2 (SLC34A2) belongs to the solute carrier gene family and is mapped to human chromosome 4p15.2. The gene codes for the type II Na/Pi co-transporter, NaPi2b. The encoded protein contains 690 amino acids. SLC34A2 is mainly localized on cell surfaces as a heavily glycosylated plasma membrane protein.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Sodium-dependent phosphate transport protein 2B (NaPi-2b), encoded by solute carrier family 34 member 2 (SLC34A2), is a multi-transmembrane sodium-dependent phosphate transporter. The protein plays a vital role in various cellular functions including transcellular inorganic phosphate absorption, maintenance of phosphate homeostasis, and tumorigenesis. Elevated expression of SLC34A2 is observed in ovarian cancer and papillary thyroid cancer, but decreased expression of the gene is observed in human non-small cell lung carcinomas. In addition, overexpression of SLC34A2 might also be implicated in the development of breast cancer. Hence, this gene might act as a potential therapeutic target and marker for diagnosis of breast cancer. Knockdown of SLC34A2 gene suppress proliferation and invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, by inhibiting the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway.
