General description

Bilirubin is a heme degradation product. It exists in conjugated and unconjugated forms. Unconjugated forms of bilirubin are primarily bound to serum albumin and transported to the liver and conjugated forms are excreted with the bile. It serves as a biomarker for jaundice and liver malfunction. At lower levels, bilirubin exhibits anti-oxidative property, but at very higher levels it may cause bilirubin-induced neurological damage (BIND). Bilirubin Conjugate, Ditaurate, Disodium Salt is suitable as a direct bilirubin standard. It behaves in a manner similar to purified bilirubin glucuronides from human bile in diazo tests.
