Collagen is a group of naturally occurring proteins found in animals, especially in the flesh and connective tissues of vertebrates. It is the main component of connective tissue, and is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up about 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content. Prepared according to the method of gallop and seifter (1). In the method, fresh calf skin is extracted with 0.5 M NaOAc to remove non-collagen proteins. The soluble collagen is extracted with 0.075 M sodium citrate pH 3.7 and precipitated as fibrils by dialysis against 0.02 M Na2HPO4. Type I collagen is a component of skin, bone, tendon, and other fibrous connective tissues.
