General description
Formed by the conjugation of cholic acid with glycine. Aggregation number: 2.1.
Glycocholic acid (GCA) is a crystalline secondary bile acid. It is a conjugate of cholic acid and glycine. The microbiota produces GCA in the small intestine by the catalysis of enzymes. Glycocholic Acid, Sodium Salt, an anionic surfactant with a steroidal backbone is soluble in water.Formed by the conjugation of cholic acid with glycine (aggregation number: 2.1; CMC: 7.1 mM; pKa: 3.8).
Application
Glycocholic Acid, Sodium Salt- is suitable for use:
- as a component in the sodium phosphate/NaCl (phosphate buffer saline-PBS) buffer to prepare protein samples
- in the preparation of fluorescently labeled mixed micelles to investigate the uptake by and transport through Caco-2 cells of two mixed micelle formulations of vitamin K
- to prepare mixed micelle solutions to encapsulate a lipid-soluble drug (vitamin K1) to analyze its influence on the quality and stability of the mixed micelle systems
Biochem/physiol Actions
Glycocholic acid (GCA) is involved in the emulsification of fats. Glycocholic acid sodium (GAS) salt is one of the important cholic acid salts in the pharmaceutical industry used to prepare mixed micelles (MMs).
