General description
Kolliphor® HS 15, a pH-independent non-ionic surfactant, is an effective solubilizer and emulsifying agent. It is soluble in aqueous media and polar organic solvents however it is not soluble in apolar solvents. Its structure has 12-hydroxystearic acid (lipophilic moiety) and polyethylene glycol (hydrophilic moiety).
Kolliphor® HS 15 is an excellent non-ionic solubilizer that finds application in excipient and formulation research.
Application
Kolliphor® HS 15 has been used:
- in dissolving dexamethasone (DEX) to intraperitoneally inject the mice to test its grip strength to measure the muscle force
- in roflumilast preparation to treat rabbits and guinea pigs to study the mechanisms and pharmacological sensitivity of ozone-induced hypertussive responses
- to dissolve finerenone for oral application in in vivo-studies
Biochem/physiol Actions
Kolliphor® HS 15 is mainly used as a solubilizer in parenteral and oral formulations. It is preferred for in vitro screening and in vivo efficacy studies of compounds. Kolliphor® HS 15 is also used in ophthalmic, macromolecule, suppository, and protein formulations due to its solubilization characteristics and safety profiles. It can form micelles typically ranging from 10-15 nm. Kolliphor® HS 15 can be used to develop micro-emulsion IV formulations.
