18-Crown-6 belongs to the class of Crown ethers, a group of macrocyclic polyethers, which have become valuable tools in organic synthesis, since they can solvate alkali, alkaline-earth and transition-metal cations in nonpolar, aprotic solvents.

Application 18-Crown-6 may be used to catalyze the N -alkylation of heterocyclic compounds and allylation of functionalized aldehydes. Additive for greener etherification using KF-alumina.
