Application
Menadione sodium bisulfite has been used:
- as a free radical inducer to study its effects on oxidative stress in sunflower seedlings
- as a positive control to produce mitochondrial O2 during the measurement of O2 in human proximal tubular cell lines
- as a redox-cycling mitochondrial pro-oxidant to study its effects on protein kinase B (AKT) and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling in cardiac cells
Biochem/physiol Actions
Menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB) is a derivative of vitamin K3 and has been studied in the treatment of hemorrhagic diseases like hypoprothrombinemia and neonatal hemorrhage, caused due to vitamin K3 deficiency. It is also considered a nutritional supplement for animals. MSB shows anticancer effects. It also protects plants from biotic and abiotic stress. MSB shows antifungal activity against certain fungi such as Fusarium graminearum, Ustilago maydis, and Alternaria alternata.
Other Notes
Water soluble vitamin K3.
