Methoxychlor is an organochlorine insecticide, used widely against a wide variety of insects in field crops, forage crops, vines, flowers, animal houses, dairies, and industries. It gets activated by contact and ingestion, modulating the voltage-gated sodium channels and causing hyperexcitation. It also exhibits endocrine-disrupting behavior by means of displaying both estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities.
According to the Commission Regulation (EC) No 2076/2002 of 20th November 2002, methoxychlor is not approved for use in the European Union (EU) as a plant protection agent, following the Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. But a default maximum residue limit of 0.01-0.1 mg/kg is applicable for its presence in the products of plant and animal origin as per the EU Reg. 149/2008.
Application
The certified reference material (CRM) is intended to be used as a calibrant for chromatography and other analytical techniques.
Methoxychlor CRM may also be used as given below:
- To determine residues of selected pesticides in agricultural water samples by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)(2)
Ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction (UASE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) based extraction of 20 organochlorine pesticides from ethylenevinyl acetate (EVA) passive samplers employed for monitoring of marine surface waters, followed by a gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) detection - Simultaneous extraction and determination of 89 hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in marine sediment and biota samples using gas chromatography-electron ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-EI-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS)
- Determination of 26 organochlorine pesticides in tobacco samples using magnetic graphene for QuEChERS-based sample extraction and determination by online gel permeation chromatography-gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (online GPC-GC-MS2)
- Evaluate the coupling of gel-permeation clean-up (GPC) with gas-chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and liquid-chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) techniques to determine various pesticides in fatty matrices
- Multi-residue analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in personal product samples by gas chromatography in combination with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and electron capture detector (GC-ECD)
Biochem/physiol Actions
Pesticide with estrogenic activity.
