General description
Caffeine Mettler-Toledo melting point standard is useful for the routine calibration of Mettler-Toledo melting point instrument. The value for its melting point equals an average of 6 to 12 measurements with a Mettler-Toledo MP70 excellence melting point instrument that is calibrated with primary standards.
Application
Mettler-Toledo calibration standard ME 18872, caffeine (234-236.5 °C) finds its use in the calibration of thermosystem 900, in both pharmacopeia and thermodynamic modes of operation.
This mp standard is also employed as a temperature calibration standard in thermal analysis techniques.
Biochem/physiol Actions
A central nervous system stimulant believed to act through adenosine receptors and monoamine neurotransmitters. It is an adenosine receptor antagonist and adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Thus, levels of cAMP increase in cells following treatment with caffeine. It has been reported to affect cellular calcium levels, releasing calcium from intracellular stores. It overrides the cell cycle effects of various chemicals such as protease inhibitors, preventing apoptosis; and it has been shown to inhibit cellular DNA repair mechanisms.
