p-Nitrophenyl β-D-Cellotetraoside

p-Nitrophenyl β-D-Cellotetraoside is an oligosaccharide with a p-nitrophenyl group attached at the end. p-Nitrophenyl β-D-Cellotetraoside has been employed as a probe for studying the behavior of cellobiohydrolase enzymes. The cleavage pattern of p-Nitrophenyl β-D-Cellotetraoside by action of a newly described cellulosomal cellobiohydrolase CeIO helped to determine that this particular enzyme processes oligosaccharides from the reducing end in a processive mode after making random cuts of the substrate. Such an approach can be used to elucidate the properties of various cellulase and glucanase enzymes.
