PAF C-18:1 (Platelet Activating Factor C-18:1) is a biologically active phospholipid synthesized by various cell types upon activation with appropirate stimulation such as the result of the inflammatory process. It is is an activator of PAF-R. This potent hypotensive factor activates platelets and inflammatory cells and is reported to cause platelets to aggregate, change shape and release granular contents. This compound is also noted to induce eosinophil migration during inflammation. The biological activity of this compound is thought to be due to the presence of the acetyl moiety at the sn-2 position of the molecule. Reports indicate that the removal of the acetyl moiety by acetylhydrolase abolishes any biological activity of the compound. Additionally, in bovine-brain lipid extract Depressor-IA, a vasodepressor phospholipid fraction, is believed to act in conjunction with PAF and thereby account for the hypotensive effect of Depressor-IA.
