Like EB, PI intercalates into double-stranded DNA and releases red fluorescence. It is often used for the detection of apoptosis or necrosis, and is often used for flow cytometry analysis. Although PI cannot pass through living cell membranes, it can pass through damaged cell membranes to stain nuclei. PI is often used with Calcein, AM, Hoechst 33258 or Hoechst 33342, etc. It can stain live and dead cells at the same time.
