Application
Sodium dodecyl sulfate has been used:
- to dissolve insoluble purple formazan in 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay
- to perform SDS–PAGE of yeast tubulin
- as an additive in linolenic acid solution to assess the total antioxidative activity (TAA) of the bacteria using the linolenic acid test (LA-test)
Anionic detergent
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/lauryl sulfate, an ionic detergent has the ability to distract biological membranes. It can block RNase and deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity. SDS is one of the main constituents of several reagents, that are used to purify nucleic acids. It is also considered as a permeability enhancer in oral formulations.
Quality
Predominantly (approx. 70%) C12; lauryl sulfate, sodium salt; balance consists of higher homologs.
