Application
Sodium dodecyl sulfate solution has been used:
- in the preparation of 2x extraction buffer
- as a component in elution buffer for immunoprecipitation
- in SDS–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) analysis
Biochem/physiol Actions
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/lauryl sulfate, is an ionic detergent has the ability to disrupt biological membranes. It can block ribonuclease (RNase) and deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity. SDS is one of the main constituents of several reagents, that are used to purify nucleic acids. It is also considered as a permeability enhancer in oral formulations.
Other Notes
In large-scale phenol extraction of RNA - promotes the dissociation of protein from nucleic acids when extracting from biological material
