General description
Antibiotic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Often used in culture media to control growth of microorganisms. Inhibits initiation, elongation, and termination of protein synthesis in prokaryotes and induces misreading of the genetic code.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Primary Target
initiation, elongation, and termination of protein synthesis in prokaryotes and induces misreading of the genetic code
Warning
Toxicity: Carcinogenic / Teratogenic (D)
Preparation Note
Autoclaved media should be cooled to ≤55°C before adding streptomycin.
Reconstitution
Following reconstitution, sterilize by filtration through a 0.22 µm pore-size filter, aliquot and freeze (-20°C). Stock solutions are stable for up to 3 months at -20°C.
