General description
Elemental sulfur exists in thirty different solid allotropes of which orthorhombic sulfur is the only thermodynamically stable form under normal temperature and pressure. It dissolves in a number of organic solvents and forms a large number of oxyacids. Sulfur is generally highly reactive; the S8 ring of elemental sulfur is easily broken by a number of nucleophilic reactants. The hydroxyl ions react with S at about 100oC.
Application
It finds applications in Li-S polymer batteries and as semiconductor-sensitizer layer CdS/CdSe/ZnS for solar cells.
