General description
Tetraethylammonium (TEA), a simple quaternary ammonium compound, is commonly used to block potassium channels. It can physically enter the pore and block the channel. Additionally, TEA either imitates or antagonizes the actions of choline and acetylcholine, two other quaternary ammonium ions.
Application
Tetraethylammonium chloride has been used:
- as a pharmacological agent in electrophysiology to study its pharmacological effects on Cnidarians
- as a component in refolding buffer for protein refolding
- to puff onto isolated patches to block voltage-gated K+ (Kv3) channels and post-hoc evaluation

- Assay: ≥99.0% (AT), BioUltra, for molecular biology
- Suitable for gas chromatography (GC)
