General description
Anhydrous vinylene carbonate (VC) is a clear, colorless liquid with a relatively high boiling point of 162 °C. It is a highly polar solvent that is commonly used in a variety of chemical reactions and processes because it is an excellent solvent for a variety of organic and inorganic compounds. Electrochemically, VC decomposes at low anodic potentials on lithium metal anodes, forming polymeric species that often yield a desirable solid-electrolyte interphase.
Application
Alkyl carbonates such as VC are frequently employed as solvents for lithium ion battery electrolytes. The use of high-purity battery grade electrolytes with minimal water (<10 ppm) and acid (<10 ppm) content is crucial for achieving optimal electrochemical performance in these batteries. VC is electrochemically active and decomposes at low anodic potentials on lithium metal anodes, forming polymeric species that often yield a desirable solid-electrolyte interphase. Therefore, it is commonly used as a co-solvent with other carbonate solvents, such as ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, in lithium-ion battery electrolyte formulations to improve the performance and stability of the battery.
