General description
Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) is an inorganic compound that is commonly used as a reagent in chemical synthesis. It is used as a mild Lewis acid catalyst in cycloaddition, substitution, electrophilic aromatic additions, and selective reduction reactions. ZnCl2 is also a useful starting material for the synthesis of many organozinc reagents via transmetalation reaction.
Application
Zinc chloride can be used as:
- A catalyst to synthesize 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles by [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of organic nitriles with sodium azide.
- A reagent to promote the hydrolysis of NaBH4 for the generation of hydrogen.
- A reagent for the activation of carbon materials.
