Polyene antifungal antibiotic from Streptomyces. Affinity for sterols, primarily ergosterols, of fungal cell membranes. It is used in cell culture applications to study the formation of ion-permeable channels in fungal cell membranes. Interferes with fungal membrane permeability by forming channels in the membranes and causing small molecules to leak out. Active against yeasts also. Warning: For laboratory use only. Not fit for agricultural, household, clinical use or human consumption. USP Grade Harmful by inhalation, swallowing and contact with skin.
