Arabinose Agar is recommended for selective isolation of Enterococcus faecium from faeces, sewage and water samples. Arabinose is the fermentable carbohydrate. Phenol red is the indicator in the medium. E. faecium ferments arabinose, producing acidic conditions, hence develop yellow colored colony. Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus hirae does not ferment arabinose, hence appear as colorless- pink colored colony. Appearance: Light yellow to pink homogeneous free flowing powder Gelling: Firm, comparable with 1.5% Agar gel Color and Clarity of prepared medium: Red colored clear to slightly opalescent gel forms in Petri plates Reaction of 5.41% w/v aqueous solution at 25°C. pH : 7.8±0.2 M1576: Cultural characteristics observed with added Enterococcus faecium Selective Supplement(FD226) after an incubation at 35-37°C for 24-48 hours
