Blood Agar Base No. 2, HiVegTM medium after addition of blood, medium permits maximum recovery of Streptococci, Pneumococci and other fastidious pathogenic microorganisms without interfering with their haemolytic reactions. It is a highly nutritive medium. Microorganisms producing haemolysin give visible haemolytic zones on this medium. It also serves as a differential medium for Brucella and Campylobacter species by adding different antibiotics supplements for the respective bacteria. Also it can be used to prepare Chocolate Agar for the isolation of Haemophilus and Neisseria species, where horse blood is used for enrichment. Better results are obtained by spreading half of the horse blood agar plate with 2 drops of saponin. This medium is prepared by replacing animal peptones with vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE/GMO risk. Appearance of Powder: Yellow colored, may have slightly greenish tinge, homogeneous, free flowing powder Gelling: Firm, comparable with 1.5% Agar gel of MV834 or 1.2% Agar gel of MV834A Color and Clarity: Basal medium yields yellow colored clear to slightly opalescent gel, with addition of 7% v/v sterile defibrinated blood, cherry red colored, opaque gel forms in petri plates Reaction of 4.25% w/v of MV834 or 3.95% w/v of MV834A aqueous solution is pH 7.4 ± 0.2 at 25°C Cultural characteristics observed after an incubation at 35 - 37°C for 48 hours for MV834 and for 18-48 hours for MV834A
