CAE (Citrate Azide Enterococcus) HiVegTM Agar Base is recommended for identification of Enterococci in meat, meat products, dairy products and other food stuffs. Hiveg medium is was initially formulated by Burkwall and Hartmann and later modified by Reuter and is used for the identification of enterococci in food products. Enterococci reduce the colorless 2, 3, 5 Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chloride (FD057) to form a red colored complex, formazan, thereby imparting a red color to the enterococcal colonies. This medium is prepared by replacing animal peptones with vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE/GMO risk. Appearance of powder: Light yellow colored, may have slightly greenish tinge, homogeneous, free flowing powder Gelling: Firm, comparable with 1.5% Agar gel Color and Clarity: Yellow colored clear to slightly opalescent gel forms in petri plates Reaction of 5.84% w/v aqueous solution is pH 7.0 ± 0.2 at 25°C Cultural characteristics observed after an incubation at 35 - 37°C for 18-24 hours, with added TTC solution (FD057)
