Campylobacter HiVegTM Agar Base is recommended for the selective isolation of Campylobacter species from faecal, food and environmental specimens. Campylobacter species are ubiquitous in the environment inhabiting a wide variety of ecological niches. Infection with a Campylobacter species is one of the most common causes of human bacterial gastroenteritis. Most species are found in animals (cattle, swine) and cause infertility and abortion. This medium is prepared by replacing animal peptones with vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE/GMO risk. Appearance of powder: Light yellow colored, may have slightly greenish tinge, homogeneous, free flowing powder Gelling: Firm, comparable with 1.2% Agar gel Color and Clarity: Basal medium yields yellow colored, clear gel without any precipitate. Addition of 5-7% v/v lysed blood forms reddish brown colored opalescent gel in petri plates Reaction of 3.95% w/v aqueous solution is pH 7.4 ± 0.2 at 25°C Cultural characteristics observed after an incubation at 35 - 37°C for 24 - 48 hours under reduced oxygen atmosphere
