General description
Cefiderocol has been shown to be effective in preventing the emergence of resistant mutants but is not active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or colistin-resistant bacteria. This versatile compound finds applications in cell biology and biochemical research.
Cefiderocol is a novel injectable siderophore cephalosporin, which was formerly known as S-649266. It has a catechol-type siderophore and cephalosporin core and side chains. Cefiderocol has structural similarity with both ceftazidime and cefepime, besides the chlorocatechol group on the end of the C-3 chain.
Application
Cefiderocol has been used:
- study bacterial infections and tracking their uptake in vivo
- the study of the activity of Cefiderocol against gram-negative bacteria
Biochem/physiol Actions
Mode of Action: Cefiderocol binds to specific proteins called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the bacterial cell wall. This binding affinity inhibits the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Antimicrobial Spectrum: Cefiderocol has strong antimicrobial properties, especially against a wide spectrum of Gram-negative pathogens. Due to its siderophore core it is also a natural iron-chelator, which adds to its antibacterial activities.
