Chlorhexidine, Dihydrochloride is an anti-microbial agent that acts as an inhibitor of MMP-2 and MMP-9 metalloproteinases. However, MMP-2 is more sensitive to chlorhexidine than MMP-9. Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride inhibits the collagenase activity of MMP-8 released by PMA-triggered polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) in a dose-dependent manner.
