Ellners broth is recommended for induction of spore formation in Clostridium perfringens. Sulphate and phosphate buffers the medium and also helps in sporulation. Generally sporulation is stimulated by an carbohydrate source and hence starch is included in the medium. Sulphate and phosphate not only buffer the medium but also help in sporulation. Clostridium spp grows luxuriantlly on the media and sporulates under anaerobic conditions.
