General description

Principal alkaloid of ipecac, isolated from the ground roots of Uragoga ipecacuanha. Irreversibly blocks protein synthesis in eukaryotes by inhibiting the movement of ribosomes along the mRNA. Induces hypotension by blocking adrenoreceptors. Interferes with cytometric analysis of DNA replication at the early S phase. Also identified as a specific inhibitor of HIF-2α protein stability and transcriptional activity (IC₅₀ ≤1 µM.
